STATE OF THE LAFD

The LAFD is half the size it should be to serve a population of almost 4 million people. The LAFD needs more fire trucks, engines, ambulances, and wildfire brush apparatus. Currently, more than 95% of the reserve fleet is out of service. This Measure will provide the lifesaving vehicles, equipment, and resources needed to keep Los Angeles safe.

According to a recent comprehensive study of the LAFD,
our fire department needs:

FIREFIGHTERS

National standards recommend 1.81 Firefighters per 1,000 residents. The LAFD should be staffed with more than 7,300 Firefighters.

FIRE STATIONS

Fire Stations are not ideally located, and firefighters can only arrive on time less than 50% of the time. The Department needs 62 new stations to improve response times.

RESOURCES

Response times are only getting worse, at nearly double the recommended travel times.The LAFD needs additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Substations and Equipment to reduce response times.

Fire Station Facts

LAFD has an aging infrastructure with 53 stations that are at least 50 years old, including four that are over 80 years old. Based on its current fire station locations, the LAFD is only able to respond to less than half (49.2%) of roads within its response area within the nationally recommended standard of 4 minutes of travel.
